The city was founded on January 1, 1947. As of October 1, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 102,343, with 35,061 households and a population density of 192.08 persons per km². The total area is 532.82 km². The ruins of Shibata castle are the main visitor attraction and provide the backdrop to the spring cherry blossom viewing parties.
